    Clay County Board of Commissioners

The Clay County Board of Commissioners is made up of a five person commission elected by the citizens of Clay County. The Commission Chair and Vice Chair are elected each January by the Commissioners. 

Regular commission meeting days are first and third Tuesdays of each month. Commissioners serve staggered terms of four years and are elected by district. The Board chooses a full-time chairman. 

County seat: Fort Gaines, pop. 1,110. Other incorporated community: Bluffton.

Clay County is in the 12th State Senatorial District, the 149th State House District and the 2nd U.S. Congressional District.

The Clay County Courthouse and jail was built in the 1870's. Clay County is a member of the Lower Chattahoochee RDC. The County provides rural fire protection with volunteer firefighters, recreation program, senior center, park, library, EMS ambulance service, door-to-door waste collection. The county also has Planning, zoning & subdivision regulations and a county transit service.

Goals: My goals for Clay County is to improve the quality of life for all of our citizens. The Clay County Board of Commissioners have made considerable progress in recent years with the E911 system, improved ambulance service, upcoming installation of the water system on the northern end of the county and a proposed power plant. My goal is to continue improving services while creating jobs to keep our young people at home
Biography: Commissioner Shivers is a life long resident of Clay County. He has been married to his wife Sandy for thirty years and has one daughter, Heather. Commissioner Shivers and his wife also have one granddaughter. The Shivers operate Joe and David Shivers Farm, LLC. 
Accomplishments: Commissioner Shivers holds the distinction of being the first commissioner to complete the ACCG Commissioners Certification training. He is also a certified volunteer firefighter, became an ordained Deacon in 2000 and is presently Chairman of Deacons at Bethel Baptist Church.

Goals: I would like to help make Clay County a more unified place in which to live. I would love to see Blacks and Whites come together as one people. I would like to revisit some of the fees that people in my district are opposed to and will work towards bringing jobs to Clay County. I look forward to working together for the good of the people.
Biography:

James Davenport is the son of Sam and Mary Davenport. He attended Clay County High School and graduated in 1973. He later attended Albany Technical School. Commissioner Davenport is a Deacon at the Midway Baptist Church of Morris, GA. He also serves as the Adult Sunday School Teacher. Commissioner Davenport has always lived in Clay County. He married and has three children.

Goals: To work with the Board of Commissioners with the hope of bringing fresh ideas to the Board that might make a better place for all of Clay County Citizens to live in.
Biography:  Commissioner Fair has been married to Ida Mae Fair for 47 years and has three children: Debra Ann Tinsley, Radar Fair Jr. and Shirley May Fair. Commissioner Fair is a Christian in love with Christ and a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church.
Accomplishments: Commissioner Fair attended Speight High School in Clay County. He worked on the farm for 25 years with Mr. John W. Waton. In 1984 he began his career with the Georgia Department of Transportation. He recently retired with 25 years of service.
Civic/Social Affiliations: Commissioner Fair is an active member and  Deacon at Macedonia Baptist Church and a member of the NAACP.
